Position: MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III - UTILITIES - PLANT MAINTENANCE

Minimum Training & Experience

High school diploma supplemented by four years of experience in electrical, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance and repair work in the water and wastewater industry or closely related field. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

A valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License is required and Water or Wastewater treatment operator’s license is highly preferred.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of and skill in electrical, mechanical and plumbing maintenance.

• Considerable knowledge of the equipment, tools, materials and supplies used in maintenance.

• Considerable knowledge of the terminology used within the water and wastewater industry.

• Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.

• Knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, spelling and basic math.

• Considerable ability to troubleshoot equipment, perform and initiate appropriate corrective actions.

• Ability to read and understand Auto Cad drawings and diagrams.

• Ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to heat/cold odors, fumes, gases, smoke, noise, wetness, humidity, electric currents, machinery hazards, dust, vibrations, pathogenic substances, toxic agents, etc.

• Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

• Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and other employees of other departments as required and serve as a lead worker as necessary.

• Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

• Ability to read and interpret technical material pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.

• Ability to prepare required reports with accuracy and in a timely manner.

Specific Duties

• Performs skilled maintenance on equipment at water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, raw water intake and sanitary sewer lift stations.

• Repairs, lubricates, paints, and performs all necessary maintenance functions on pumps and equipment associated with water treatment operations, wastewater treatment operations and wastewater lift stations.

• Serves as a lead worker as necessary.

• Cleans, repairs, adjusts, and maintains blowers, compressors and tank aerations tanks; filters, louvers and screens; grit and sludge collectors; clarifiers, pumps and pipes, motors and gear boxes; ventilation and chemical distribution equipment, pneumatic control equipment; metering and monitoring devices, and other equipment on assigned schedules. Works in areas with exposure to untreated water and wastewater, to confined spaces, and to various quantities of hazardous materials (i.e. acids, bases, salts, etc.).

• Assesses equipment to detect operating flaws and locates and adjusts defects in electrical and mechanical equipment and systems.

• Operates hand and machine tools in repairing and maintaining pumps, motors, valves, plant machinery and equipment; keeps records of spare parts.

• Fabricates metal articles and repairs metal parts. Solders, rivets, seams and bolts metal parts as required. Welds light to heavy metals using various types of welding materials and methods.

• General knowledge of building construction. Makes miscellaneous repairs and adjustments to plumbing and fixtures; electrical wiring, lighting and fixtures; walls, locks, doors and windows; pumps; and cabinetry. • Receives and reviews various records and reports, including work orders, invoices, etc. Operates a computer to enter and retrieve work order data.

• Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
