Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from high school and considerable experience in ensuring the proper maintenance and management of cemetery operations, professional customer relations, and supervision of others. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite. The equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience may be considered.

A valid SC driver’s license is required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to cemetery grounds maintenance work.

• Knowledge of cemetery grounds maintenance materials, methods, equipment, procedures and operations.

• Skilled in the use of basic hand tools and operation of grounds maintenance equipment.

• Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.

• Ability to understand and carry out specific oral and written instructions and work without close supervision.

• Ability to plan and supervise the work of a crew of laborers.

• Ability to create reports using Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel) and other database applications.

• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

Specific Duties

• Supervises division employees and participates in the maintenance and operations of City cemeteries.

• Supervises subordinate crew workers and seasonal personnel, including scheduling, instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others, maintaining standards, coordinating activities.

• Locates and sells cemetery lots.

• Opens and closes graves.

• Operates trucks, tractors, backhoes, and other mechanized equipment.

• Assists in planning coordinating and leading various projects; inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, ensures the timely completion of all work orders.

• Enters data and prepares detailed reports for Cemeteries.

• Keeps accurate work records and reports in a timely manner.

• Performs routine maintenance on tools and equipment.

• Procures supplies, parts and materials required for daily maintenance and repair work.

• Keeps work and employee records.

• Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
