Position: ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I - UTILITIES - ELECTRIC

Minimum Training & Experience

An Associate’s degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to the satisfactory completion of twoyears of college in Engineering is preferred or high school diploma/GED with a minimum of six years ofoverhead and underground electric utility construction and/or design experience. The equivalent combination of education, and related experience may be considered.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of terminology, methods, practices, techniques, and instruments of an electric distribution system, drafting and some surveying.

• Knowledge of engineering maps and records.

• Knowledge of trigonometry as applied to computations.

• Ability to understand and work from oral and written instructions and sketches.

• Ability to make some mathematical calculations and reduce, interpret, and apply field notes to engineering design.

• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

• Basic knowledge of computers, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and email required. Experience in working with AutoCAD is helpful.

Specific Duties

• Evaluates and designs electric utility infrastructure under supervision. Prepares work order packages stakes and white lines job sites, tracks progress of construction, field checks, and marks Asbuiltsinto the City’s GIS mapping system upon completion of construction.

• Prepares computer based technical drawings and sketches for the installation of electric facilities; maintains utility system maps and records.

• Maintains as-built files and other records as required.

• Assists in maintaining and updating GIS data.

• Completes material requisitions for system projects.

• Inspects construction/installations as necessary; prepares related reports and records.

• Provides technical assistance and information to other City divisions/departments, City Council, developers, contractors, engineers, and the public regarding utility construction and installations.

• Completes special projects as assigned.

• Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints.

• Receives and reviews various records and reports, including work orders, engineering drawings, etc.

• Prepares work orders, field drawings and various other records, reports, memos and correspondence.

• Refers as needed to policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, safety manual, engineering drawings, plats, maps, codes, ordinances, GIS documents, deeds, property data, etc.

• Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, large format copier, copier, calculator, telephone, two-way radio, fax machine, etc.

• Uses computer and clerical supplies, drafting tools, engineering scale, gauges, various hand tools, etc.

• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other City divisions/department heads, and personnel, other utility companies, engineers, developers, contractors, customers, and the general public.

• Assists in preparing and maintaining cost estimates and damage estimates.

• Locates property and lot lines, and may determine ownership and description of property as needed.

• Performs general administrative/clerical duties as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, attending meetings, copying and filing documents, etc.

• Provides right-of-way- requirements to the City’s right-of-way agent for acquisition.

• Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
