Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from high school and considerable experience in laboring work, including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair, construction, lawn maintenance and athletic field maintenance. The equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience may be considered. 

A valid S.C. driver's license is required.

NOTE: Evening and weekend work is required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance work.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

• Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized equipment.

• Ability to effectively direct the work of assigned crewmembers.

• Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.

• Willingness and ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.

• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal/external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

Specific Duties

• Directs and participates as a member of a grounds maintenance crew.

• Performs routine grounds-keeping work as required, including but not limited to picking up trash and debris, cutting grass, edging sidewalks and driveways, sprays chemicals, removing weeds and leaves, blowing walks and curbs, applying mulch, prunes shrubs, etc.

• Directs and participates in the layout, preparation and maintenance of athletic fields.

• Operates trucks, tractors, mowers, and related ground maintenance equipment.

• Plants and cares for trees, shrubs, turf grass, and flowers.

• Inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to policies, procedures, standards, quality, and safety.

• Ensures the proper and timely maintenance of division equipment; performs minor mechanical repairs as required.

• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other City employees, subordinates, suppliers/vendors, outside service providers.

• Performs all other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs.
