Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from high school and considerable experience in laboring work, including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair, construction, lawn maintenance and athletic field maintenance. The equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience may be considered. Must possess a valid South Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s license or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire.

A valid driver’s license is required.


Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance work.

• Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in general maintenance, construction and repair.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

• Knowledge of precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized equipment.

• Ability to effectively supervise the work of assigned crew members.

• Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.

• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

Specific Duties

• Supervises and participates as a member of a grounds maintenance crew.

• Performs routine grounds-keeping work as required, including but not limited to picking up trash and debris, cutting grass, edging sidewalks and driveways, sprays chemicals, removing weeds and leaves, blowing walks and curbs, applying mulch, prunes shrubs, etc.

• Oversees and participates in the layout, preparation and maintenance of athletic fields.

• Operates trucks, tractors, mowers, and related ground maintenance equipment.

• Plants and cares for trees, shrubs, turf grass, and flowers.

• Inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to policies, procedures, standards, quality, and safety.

• Ensures the proper and timely maintenance of division equipment; performs minor mechanical repairs as required.

• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other City employees, subordinates, suppliers/vendors, outside service providers, and the general public.

• Performs all other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs.
