Position: ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II - UTILITIES - WATER & SEWER - MANCHESTER (JOB NO. 14418)

Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree with college level training in environmental science, chemistry, microbiology, water and wastewater with two years of experience in an environmental laboratory is preferred. Relevant experience, continuing education and/or licensure may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Considerable knowledge and proficiency in laboratory skills, including analysis and interpretation of analytical methods and results.

• Knowledge of wastewater/water treatment plant operations.

• Knowledge of computer systems and software, to include word processing, statistical functions, charting, graphing, etc.

• Ability to perform and understand mathematic activities including basic algebra and statistics.

• Ability to follow directions and perform functions and analysis from written, technical directions.

• Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with acute attention to detail.

• Ability to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills in evaluating the significance of laboratory results, analytical data, equipment performance, and unusual observations.

• Ability to interpret and apply environmental regulations.

• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

• Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours per day.

Specific Duties

• Monitors, collects, and performs field and laboratory analyses on samples for NPDES permit, Industrial Pretreatment Program and process control for the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

• Collects samples at off site locations whenever needed.

• Troubleshoots samplers and sampling equipment.

• Assists with industrial pretreatment sampling.

• Maintains field equipment, instrumentation, and vehicle(s). Records associated calibration, operation, routine maintenance, and service/repairs including quality control/quality assurance requirements.

• Maintains chain of custody and other records for samples.

• Prepares bottles and other supplies as needed.

• Distributes supplies and chemicals for laboratory.

• Performs analytical work in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, as prescribed by applicable state and federal regulations.

• Uses and maintains laboratory equipment/instrumentation along with all associated records.

• Participates in the administration of the quality control/quality assurance program.

• Communicates effectively with peers, both verbally and in writing. Communication shall include, but is not limited to; reporting lab results in a timely manner, reduction and interpretation of analytical data, and detection of possible abnormalities and/or anomalies.

• Assists laboratory supervisor with all tasks required for laboratory certification through the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

• Assists lab supervisor with data management, including information management system software.

• Assists wastewater operations with process control sampling and analyses.

• Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.

Additional Notes

Rotating weekend and holiday work is required.
